REVIEW

"There are moments here of intense beauty, ambient pads emerging suddenly out of nowhere to give the piece a symphonic, beatific edge."

4 Saints in 3 Acts, opéra moderniste et primitiviste.

At the end of the 1920s the composer Virgil Thomson met Gertrude Stein in Paris and invited her to write the libretto of a modernist opera. In 1934, Four Saints in Three Acts was premiered in the United States where it was a phenomenal success. Performers were recruited from Harlem's choirs and night clubs. For the first time black artists played roles that made no reference to their skin colour, they were paid decently and the media praised them. Yet this opera and some of its protagonists have been erased from history. Who is remembered and why? Who is watching and who is being watched? What are the socio-historical corollaries of such a complex work? Dr. Emily Bernard author, professor at the University of Vermont, uses the analysis of Four Saints as a starting point to address the representation of the black body in art and literature, from the Harlem Renaissance to the present day.

Affirming our presence, we see the Ubique project as a place for experimentation. Merging our practices of contemporary dance and electroacoustic music, we develop together a sensitive language, a link of vibration of the mutual space.
